Start with access: can you reach the battery or charging connector after the shade is installed, and is there a suitable power route near the window? Compare the exact rechargeable, replaceable-battery and wired options before choosing a motor. Power source and smart-home compatibility are separate decisions.

Compare the complete power plan
| Option | Plan for | Ask before ordering |
|---|---|---|
| Rechargeable battery | Access to the charging connector and a compatible charging cable | How is it charged in the installed position? |
| Replaceable batteries | Access to the battery compartment or pack | Which type and quantity are specified for this configuration? |
| Wired power | The matching supply, cable route and installation work | Which power equipment and connections does this motor require? |
| Solar accessory | A compatible panel, suitable light and a cable route | When might manual charging still be needed? |
Rechargeable does not mean maintenance-free
SmartWings describes a rechargeable lithium-ion battery system and specifies a USB-A to USB-C charging cable on its battery-powered shade page. That is a product example, not a universal cable rule for every shade. Ask which charger, connector and cable length are approved for the exact motor.
For tall windows, include charging access in the installation plan. Check which side the connector sits on and whether a valance or second layer obstructs it. Compare an accessible extension option with the manufacturer before ordering.
Replaceable batteries are a different choice
Serena’s battery FAQ explains that the required battery type and quantity depend on the chosen shade, size and fabric, with details provided during configuration and in the order confirmation. It also ties battery life to the shade and how often it moves.
Keep the specified battery details with each window’s order. Do not compare a quoted rechargeable interval with a replaceable-battery life claim without checking the conditions behind each figure. Ask how the compartment opens after mounting and what access space it needs.
Wired shades: include the supply and cable route
SmartWings lists multiple wired power configurations, including DC, AC and PoE, with availability varying by shade and configuration. A shade described as wired does not establish which voltage, supply or accessories belong in your order.
Have the seller and installer agree on the exact motor, supply, route and included installation work before purchase. Request the matching installation document. Electrical connections should be planned and completed by an appropriately qualified installer; this guide does not provide wiring instructions.
For a renovation, settle the equipment and access locations before finishing the walls. For an existing room, include visible cable routing and the location of serviceable equipment in the design discussion.
Does a solar panel eliminate charging?
A solar accessory can charge a compatible motor’s battery rather than replace that battery. SmartWings recommends direct sunlight for better charging and notes that occasional manual charging may be needed in low-light conditions. Its stated arrangement uses one panel per shade.
Check the actual window rather than assuming every bright room is suitable. Discuss window orientation, shading from neighboring buildings, panel position, cable routing and seasonal light with the manufacturer. Keep a manual charging plan if the chosen system requires one.
Power source does not establish app compatibility
A battery or wired motor can still have different control protocols. Record the exact motor and the platform you want to use, then confirm the remote, bridge, controller or border router required. Read whether motorized shades need a hub before comparing complete packages.

Save a maintenance plan for each window
Before approving the order, describe how you will access the power components in the final installed position. Include curtains, valances and nearby furniture in that check.
| Record | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Charging or battery access | Connector or compartment position, access space and anything that obstructs it |
| Approved accessories | Exact charger, cable, battery specification or power supply for the selected motor |
| Solar arrangement, if selected | Panel compatibility, location and cable route, plus a manual charging plan |
| Wired arrangement, if selected | Agreed equipment route, service access and installation scope |
| Support record | Motor option, matching manual and seller’s support or replacement process |
Copy this seller request: “For [window label and motor], please confirm how I will charge or service the power components after installation, including [curtains/valance/height]. List every approved power accessory, what is included, and any separate installation cost. If solar is selected, please confirm the panel arrangement and manual charging requirements.”
Common power-planning questions
Will a solar panel remove every charging task?
Keep the exact manufacturer’s guidance with the order. Solar charging depends on the selected system and its light conditions; confirm whether occasional manual charging is needed.
Does rechargeable mean I can use any USB charger?
Use only the charger and cable approved for the selected motor. A connector or cable specification from another brand does not establish compatibility.
Will a wired motor automatically work with my smart-home platform?
Power and connectivity are separate choices. Confirm the exact protocol, platform and required control equipment alongside the power supply.
Plan power around daily use.
Connect charging and service access with the chosen mount, smart controls and full quote.
