Quick answer: Choose woven wood shades for their texture, then choose the liner for your room’s privacy and light needs. An unlined bamboo or grass weave should not be assumed to provide nighttime privacy. A privacy liner and a blackout liner also serve different purposes.

Unlined, privacy-lined or blackout-lined?

ConfigurationConsider it whenConfirm before buying
Unlined woven woodYou want visible texture and filtered daylight, with another treatment handling privacy if needed. How open is the weave? Can people see through it under your evening lighting?
Privacy linerPrivacy matters, but a softly lit room is still welcome. What does the manufacturer promise about visibility and silhouettes? How much light passes through?
Blackout linerYou want stronger light blocking, especially for a bedroom. How does the finished shade cover the window edges, and will curtains be needed?

These are starting points for a shortlist, not universal performance ratings. Ask for the specifications of the exact material and liner combination.

Can people see through bamboo shades at night?

Do not judge evening privacy from a bright daytime room photo. SelectBlinds states that its Natural Cordless Woven Wood materials may allow visibility depending on lighting and that this particular collection has no liner option. That is a useful reminder to check the actual collection rather than assuming every bamboo shade can be upgraded.

For a street-facing window, place privacy ahead of appearance. Ask the seller what is visible when indoor lights are on after dark. If a swatch is available, examine it against both daylight and a lamp; a small sample helps with weave and color, but cannot prove the privacy of a complete installation.

Does a blackout liner make the room completely dark?

A liner treats light passing through the material. Window coverage is a separate decision. The Shade Store’s woven wood FAQ explains that blackout lining blocks most light while side gaps can remain, including with an outside mount. Check coverage before choosing this option for sleep.

Compare the finished shade dimensions, headrail position and permitted overlap with the manufacturer’s measuring instructions. Read our blackout light-gap checklist if darkness is your main goal. Avoid copying another brand’s width deductions.

Five questions to add to your quote

  1. Availability: Is your selected weave offered with a privacy or blackout liner?
  2. Appearance: Which color faces the room, which faces the street, and how does lining change the visible weave?
  3. Operation: Is the liner attached to the shade or separately operable? What lift options work with it?
  4. Fit: What mounting depth and raised stack height apply to the lined configuration?
  5. Total cost: Does the saved quote include lining, lift upgrades, shipping and installation?

Choose by room, then compare the complete configuration

For a living room, start with your daylight and evening privacy needs. For a bedroom, compare blackout lining and edge coverage together. For a bathroom or another humid space, ask whether the specific natural material and lining are suitable for that environment.

Order samples before choosing a color, record each window separately, and save a screenshot of the selected liner. Our complete custom-shade quote checklist helps keep comparisons consistent.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add a liner after buying?

Ask the manufacturer before ordering. A retrofit should not be assumed to work with the existing lift, brackets or warranty.

Is a privacy liner the same as blackout?

No. Confirm the seller’s description of both options; do not treat a privacy label as a promise of a dark bedroom.

Will the sample show exactly how my shade will look?

It helps with texture and color. Ask about natural variation and view the lined combination where possible; it does not reproduce a full window.
