Choose the texture.
Then check the clearance.

Choose Roman shades when fabric folds are part of the room’s design. Shortlist roller shades when you prefer a flat panel and a rolled finish. Neither style name decides bedroom darkness, nighttime privacy or the final price. Compare the exact fabric, raised position and complete specification.

Which should you choose for your room?

Living & dining

Let the fabric do more.

Shortlist Roman shades when the folds are part of your design brief. Hold samples beside upholstery and trim, then review the shade both raised and lowered. For a simpler visual outline, compare a roller sample and its actual hardware.

Bedroom

Start with coverage.

Request a blackout specification for both styles. Compare the liner or fabric, edge gaps and any second layer. Choose the appearance after confirming how the finished installation meets your darkness goal.

Home office

Test the daytime view.

Look through the exact sample from the desk. If you shortlist a solar roller for view and glare management, plan nighttime privacy separately. A fabric’s solar openness is not a nighttime privacy guarantee.

For a kitchen or bathroom, put the material’s moisture suitability and care instructions ahead of the style label. Get written approval for the intended location; neither “Roman” nor “roller” means waterproof.

Will you raise and lower it every day?

A decorative fold and a daily-use shade can ask different things of the owner. The Shade Store identifies its Flat, Cascade, Aventura and Pleated Roman styles as suitable for frequent operation. Its Relaxed and Tulip styles are primarily decorative and may need their folds dressed after adjustment. That is guidance for those products, not a rule for every manufacturer’s similarly named shade.

Ask for an operation video. See the exact Roman fold rise, lower and settle without the camera cutting away. For either construction, confirm how you will reach the control, recharge a motor and access any required hub.

Use our Roman fold guide to daily operation to separate the look you want from the operating routine you are willing to follow. Compare the exact motor and hub requirements before calling a shade smart-home compatible.

Raised stack and mounting depth are different checks

01 · Space over the glass

Ask for the fully raised assembly’s vertical size, including the headrail if the drawing uses that reference. Mark where its bottom edge would land relative to the glass. Repeat with the roller’s roll or cassette.

02 · Space into the recess

Check minimum bracket depth, depth for a fully recessed finish and forward projection. Note handles, cranks and the window’s opening path. A shade that mounts successfully may still project past the trim.

Hartmann&Forbes’ Roman stacking guide separates estimates by material and operating system, with adjustments for selected upgrades. It illustrates why a stack dimension should come from the exact specification rather than a generic Roman-shade rule.

Illustrative clearance calculation · not a product specification

How much glass would remain covered?

Suppose a supplier confirms that the entire raised assembly extends 12 inches below its top reference point. If that same reference point is planned 8 inches above the glass:

12″ − 8″ = 4″

The assembly would extend approximately 4 inches over the glass. Confirm the reference points, wall space, mounting approval and final assembly drawing before using this calculation for an order.

A real example: the lift changes the required depth

The checked Blinds.com Roman Shades product lists different inside-mount requirements for its cordless and motorized versions:

Swipe to compare minimum mounting depth with fully recessed depth.

Exact lift optionMinimum inside depthFully recessed depth
Cordless1⅝ inches2¾ inches
Motorized2⅜ inches3 inches

A 2-inch recess meets this model’s cordless minimum, but not its motorized minimum; it does not fully recess either. This is a depth comparison only. Size limits, obstructions, mounting surface and the selected configuration still need approval. Specifications checked October 19, 2026.

Use the seller’s own measuring method. SmartWings, for example, separates its Roman and roller instructions rather than applying one formula to every shade family. See our inside vs outside mount guide for the broader fit checklist.

Can Roman shades or roller shades make a bedroom dark?

Both can be specified around a blackout goal, but the material and the installed coverage must be checked separately. With Roman shades, name the face fabric and liner together. With rollers, name the exact blackout material and finished fabric width. Ask how each proposed installation handles the top, bottom and sides of the opening.

  • Request the exact sample or sample-and-liner combination.
  • Confirm fabric coverage rather than relying only on headrail width.
  • Ask which gap-control accessories or additional layers are compatible with the proposed product.

Continue with our blackout light-gap guide. If your roller shortlist includes solar fabric, use the separate nighttime privacy guide before ordering.

Compare the care routine before choosing a fabric

The Shade Store’s comparison recommends different care approaches depending on the material, including specialist treatment for stains on some natural Roman fabrics. Get the care sheet for the exact collection you select. Do not assume a textured roller is wipe-clean or that a Roman shade can go into a washing machine.

Ask: Can the fabric be spot-cleaned? Which products are approved? Is the liner cleaned in the same way? If the shade needs removal, who handles the motor and hardware? Use these answers when comparing a frequently used room with a mainly decorative window.

Which costs more? Compare complete room plans.

A basic roller and a lined, motorized Roman shade do different jobs at different specifications. The useful comparison is the amount required to finish the same window to your chosen standard.

  1. Keep the brief consistent. Use the same opening, intended mount, light goal and level of service.
  2. Name the full fabric specification. Include the Roman fold, liner and trim, or the roller material, roll direction and cassette.
  3. Match the controls. List the motor, power source, remote and any required hub or bridge.
  4. Include the remaining costs. Add gap-control hardware, a second treatment if needed, delivery, installation and tax; record the quote date and measurement-error remedy.

A request to send the seller

“Please quote one Roman and one roller option for my window, with the same privacy goal and controls. Include the fully raised assembly dimensions, minimum and flush mounting depths, finished fabric coverage, all accessories and the total installed cost. Please identify the exact fabric, liner or opacity and any exclusions.”

Use our 34 × 72-inch quote-comparison method to keep the options consistent. A starting price for another size or fabric is not your configured order total.

Common Roman vs roller shade questions

Are Roman shades always more expensive?

No fixed price order applies to every configuration. Compare the same window, fabric goal, controls and installation service. A premium roller with a cassette, motor and additional privacy layer is a different purchase from a basic manual roller.

Do Roman shades block more of the window when raised?

They form a folded assembly, so its dimensions deserve a separate check. How much glass remains covered depends on the selected product and mounting position. Ask for the actual raised drawing for both options; use the clearance example above only as a planning method.

Are Roman shades suitable for a modern room?

They can be part of a modern design brief. Compare a clean-lined fold and quiet fabric with the exact roller finish you would otherwise choose. Review the whole window, including the exposed hardware and the raised position, rather than judging by a style name.

Can both styles be motorized?

Motorized options exist for both. Confirm availability for the exact Roman fold or roller material, dimensions and control platform. Recheck the mounting requirements when changing from a manual lift to a motor.
